Top Ten: Things I Wish I'd Known...

...Before I Became a Fresher.

1. No matter how shy you are, you will make friends.
I was so worried before I went to University that I wouldn't make a single friend or that no one would like me. I had horrible visions of being stuck in my room listening to everyone else having fun. I really didn't need to worry though. Making friends in University is not as scary or impossible as it seems. You meet so many people during Freshers that even if you are shy, you'll end up with at least 3 or 4 friends. You'll make even more once you start your course as well!

2. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.
If you don't want to drink, go out, drink the dirty pint, you don't have to! No one can make you do anything and the people who think less of you for not doing something aren't worth worrying about anyway.

However, it is important to venture outside your comfort zone once in a while. I had no one to go to Archery with and I hate doing things alone but I forced myself to go to the first training session and I loved it!

3. Freshers Flu is not a myth.
It is very real. It is the worst cold you've ever had. It will not kill you (it will just feel like it is). It's inevitable when so many students are all living in one place and you're drinking, not having enough sleep or good food. Don't panic though! It's nothing that warm drinks, cold/flu medicines, cough medicine/throat sweets, vegetables/fruit and lots of sleep won't cure. Just look after yourself and you'll be better in no time!

4. Bring as much fancy dress as you can.
Nobody is exaggerating when they say that fancy dress is a big deal in University. Some University have more fancy dress events than others but everyone will have at least one event. You'll be so thankful for those ties, silly glasses, funny hats... Anything and everything that counts as a costume!

5. Don't panic about your work!
In most Universities, your first year doesn't count towards your final degree mark. While it's important to do well, this year is all about learning how to work at University standard. Don't freak out if you get a bad mark or have no idea what to do. Treat this year as a learning curve and make sure you get all the help that's offered to you!

6. You will learn how to do your own laundry.
And you actually won't suck at it. The big giant "how to use machines" posters will definitely help you as well.

7. Basic cooking skills would be useful.
Simple things like how to cook meats, vegetables, how to cook eggs, bacon etc. You don't want to spend the year eating take-out foods and ready meals so it would be nice to be able to eat "normal" food every once in a while.

8. "Chloe's drawer/cupboard" doesn't mean much to other people.
Apparently there are people who blatantly ignore the simple rules of living with others. They will either not bring their own things and just use everyone else's (seriously, who are you and what goes through your mind) or they'll have their own things but still use everyone else's. Either way they're the worst kind of people and you will spend the year hating them.

9. Don't join every society that takes your fancy.
You will spend a lot of money and will only end up going to one of the societies for the rest of the year. The best thing to do is go on the first day, take in all the information but don't pay until the next day. That gives you plenty of time to seriously think about what you want to join (and it gives you enough time to decide not to pay £15 for cheerleading just because you like the outfits).

10. The "University Experience" isn't just about drinking.
You will go to the beach at 2am with your new friends and watch shooting stars. You will spend days/evenings playing at the beach. You will go shopping and eating and you'll play lazertag. You will make mattress forts and spend all day in them. You will watch movies and Top Gear and play video games. You'll cook together, eat together and suffer through Freshers Flu together. You'll have your first cinema trip as a group and you'll even spend two weeks together in Italy. There is so much more to this year than getting drunk and you will be amazed at just how much you're going to love it.
